Buses by the Beach

I took the inaugural trip in the bus last weekend to the River Rouge Campground in Belmont Mi. To attend the Buses by the Beach Camp out.  This is a benefit for the Phoenix Society of Burn Survivors .  One of the founding members of the group was in an airline crash and the society helped him in his recovery.  This camp out, that has occurred for the last 8 years is his way of saying thanks.

The weekend was full of music and beer from the HopCat Brewery in Grand Rapids

There were many different ways to to contribute to the society.  We had a lunch, breakfast and a raffle with many donated items. Of the quilt was the most coveted item.  Many folks contributed the squares and then it was sewn into the quilt.

Sunday we went for a bus blessing to ensure that we all have safe travels during the summer.  I can tell you that I didn’t pass that up given past history.  We carabused to Townsend Park where we gathered into a circle for a moment of silence.  Then each bus (and motorcycle) was blessed and a drop of 30wt oil under the bumper.

It was a great weekend with friends, the bus ran great.  I can’t wait for more camping this year and to attend this camp out next year

Getting Ready for Summer

Well . . .  I thought I was going to bring Kermit back home today, but I just can’t get the electrical right.  I may have made matters worse 😦 .  I had everything working and the bus wouldn’t start.  DAMN . . . novoltage to the coil.  I saw the the coil wire the the ignition was not connected.  When I connected it . . . POOF. .  a little smoke.  I discovered that the coil wire from the coil was on the wrong fuse.  I corrected that and everything was fine… well except that when the lights are on, so are the brake lights…. of corse no break lights and the right turn signal doesn’t work.  With the lights off the right signal in the rear is realy the flashers . . .  Dragola . . .  BUT.  I did find a guy in Coldwater that has experience in VW electrical work, so I left the bus with him.  The good thing though is when I did take him out, he ran strong at 50 / 55 mph (according to GPS).  The speedo cable broke so when the electrical is fixed, I’ll replace it.  Another positive note is that I got the wiper moter going.  Just tok it apart and worked the armature for a while, but when I connected the wires . . . POOF . . . Hopefully Pete will get me going again.

Happy Easter

bunny

Went home over the weekend to visit Kermit.  Put the new signal switch on and it did help matters at all.  I still have both tail lights flashing when when I turn right.  I blew a fuse and went up to the local NAPA dealer for a fuse.  One of my friends offered to give me a labor discount if he could drive the bus around town!  Replaced the fuse and started looking closer at the wiring and a piece broke off the fuse block.  That needs replacing.  Then I got to thinking . . .  hey . . .  I don’t have the ground strap connected under the bus.  Of course I didn’t think about that until last night after I was already home.  AND the speedo cable broke.  On the highside, the he started right up and ran like a top!  I think Ill go back in May and bring him back home for the summer.  Dad is going to put some tinted glass in the windshield and Ill rebuild the windows.

Made it to Michigan

I just realized that I have not reported on the trip back to Michigan over Thanksgiving. The plastic lasted until I got to about 30 miles an hour, then the draft started. That was so bad, it was my feet that froze. The heater I bought emitted about as much heat as one does when they exhale, so that wasn’t much good. I wasn’t sure on how the mileage was. I had to leave early (Friday) to go to Indy for a work crisis. I didn’t even a picture of Kermit in the barn. Oh well we’ll be going back over Christmas and I’ll get one then

The bottom line is .  . . I made the trip without incident!

Prep For the Thanksgiving Trip

Well I drove Kermit to work on Friday.  Since I was only there a half of day, I thought I would see how it went. This was one of the best trips yet.  Made it up there and back without incident.  I do think I’m lacking on gas mileage, but I’ll check for sure on the way to Michigan.  I hope it warms up a little.  We have been getting flurries and not getting much above 40 degrees.

Every Question Deserves an Answer

I asked in my last post what else could happen and I got an answer.  Seems Kermit has a minor electrical problem.  When I turn the right turn signal on, both tail lights and license plate light blink too. The front works fine and the left works as designed.  Who needs turn signals anyway?  According to  this article in the Chicago Sun-Times, 57% of Americans don’t use them anyway.  However at $75.00 a ticket, I think that I will see what I can do th get the right one operational.  I have been looking at the wiring diagram for my model year and it is helpful to a point.  I wish I could see the schematic diagram of the switches, which would help a lot.  Anyway I took some data on the directional swich and came up with the following:

So the data appears to be correct for both the left and right signals, so it is probably a bad ground.  Something is not isolated.  Not sure if this will get corrected before Spring or not,  Going to take him back to Michigan over Thanksgiving to sleep in the Pole Barn in Athens for the Winter.

Planned Activities

We have a few things planned for this year already. Unfortunately nothing with organized bus folks yet, but there is time. We have to juggle around baseball and football too. But that won’t slow us down too much. The first trip on the agenda is actually getting the bus. We hare considering a few alternatives. Driving down to pick up the bus and driving back, flying down and driving Kermit back, or either Marilyn or I flying down and driving back. Personally I would like to find the cheapest plan. This will allow more money to spend on family outings 🙂 . The maiden voyage will be to Michigan over the 4th of July. We will be meeting friends from Colorado and DC for a weekend on Lake Michigan. Then to Hartford Michigan to my cousin’s wedding. This will be the first time Kermit will meet the rest of the family. Then to Indiana over Labor Day weekend to the Bean Blossom Blues, Brew, and BBQ festival in Nashville. I have wanted to go this for a couple of years. This year they have added the BREW and BBQ to the event.
