Finally!

I got the bus over to Dave Ellis on Monday and he got the electrical NAILED!  He soldered the ground in the back and ran a new wire.  He also adjusted the valves, which #2 AND #4 were sticking, adj the clutch, and brakes.  He also gave me a laundry list of things that need to be resolved:  Rear wheel cylinder is leaking, Need new axle boots and fill the RGB, Trans fluid, tightened the fan belt before vacation.  I need the king pins on the passenger side and oil pressure switch. RGB and Sterring box maintenance  Here is a pict out side his garage with a Ghia that matches the bus . . .  .  Too bad the camera on my phone blows 😦

Try Again

Well I got a call and Kermit is ready to go.  I got a call from Dad and it was only $40.00 to fix the issue,  I was close, just a couple of wires were wrong.  I guess me and the boys will take the train home this weekend and bring him home! Pete told me that I needed a new wiper motor since it is a 6v motor.  I may just use it till it goes.  At least Ill have some wipers.  I need to adjust the valves next.  I wish I had gaskets so I could have someone show me how to do it.  Maybe I’ll try to do it and then take it to Stanley to check.  I’m still paranoid about blowing another motor.  I bought a tool on the Samba to make the job easier.

This will allow me to hold the feeler gauge and adjust the valve at the same time.  I also found a movie

New Engine Notes

I looked a little closer at the new engine yesterday. I think I did notice is that it has dual exhaust with chrome tips! It has a Solex 34 PICT-3 carb, which was the original carb on a 1600 DP engine from 1971 to 1974. The distributor is a dual vaccum 049 instead of the .009 in the old motor. I don’t know enough about distributors yet to know difference . . . .

However, according to Bob Hoover, ” the overwhelming majority of VW owners — and manufacturers — have found that a distributor incorporating vacuum-advance not only gives better mileage but prolongs the life of the engine.” That is good enough for me to keep the 049 in Kermit.

I have found that neither engine has a thermostat or the cooling flaps. Since I know the engine overheated and that I can reduce the temperature another 15 to 17% by installing these, I searched The Samba and found that a person had the HW I needed for a great price!

Bob Hoover has also written articles on the importance of this part of the cooling system. He has also provided a procedure on how to restore this system. The bottom line is, the engineers from Volkswagen felt that their engines needed this cooling system to run efficiently. I know i’m not qualified to argue. Besides I don’t know many folks that take thermostats out of their water cooled vehicles. I did notice that the exhaust manifold in the left hand side has a rust hole, so I’ll swap with the old engine.

I ordered some tuneup parts, Oil Cooler and manifold gaskets today. I forgot the oil screen, but I’m sure I’ll need something else before it’s all over.

Before You Leave . . . . .

The more we lean about the bus community the more we are finding it is like one big family! In our quest for our bus we were advised to “print out an AIRS list” before we embark on any trip. Well, we scratched our heads trying to figure out what that exactly meant and finally asked the person what AIRS was. We found out that it is Air Cooled Internet Rescue Squad. These folks have volunteered to help in various ways to stranded VW motorists around the country including Alaska and Hawaii. One common theme I have noticed looking at the list is that these folks list what kind of beer they like….. again my kind of people…

My favorite beer is from a brewery in Kalamazoo Michigan…damn Illinois distributors screwed us so now I need to go to Michigan to get it….sorry I digress this is the wrong forum for that rant . . . Suffice to say Kalamazoo is on the way to Mom and Dad’s house, so all is not lost.
